Western Foodies Kicks Off the Year With a Spooky Successful Night

By: Cassandra Lundsgaard, edited by Sarena Akhter

Hello Foodies!

Western Foodies takes over UCC Concrete Beach

We had a spook-tacular time at our Pumpkin Carving night from October 25th 2022. Scroll down to see how it went down...

FUN FACT: Plus the matching Spiderman action!

Did you know that this pumpkin carving tradition started in Ireland? People carved scary faces on their turnips to scare away the soul of “Stingy Jack”—Jack was a man who supposedly deceived the devil into robbing money from citizens. When he faced his death, he was neither let into heaven or hell, so his soul was left wandering around the earth.

This tradition moved from turnips to pumpkins when many Irish people immigrated to the US as pumpkins were accessible in this new land. Whether the story of Jack is true or not, it is safe to say that a great Halloween tradition came out of it!

Creative Designs from the Night

We were amazed with how creative so many of your designs were! We have prepared a short gallery of some of our favourites from the night. All photos from the night are accessible via a Google Drive link in our Instagram bio.

Delicious Fresh Catered Pie from Angelos!

The mouthwatering freshly-baked caramel apple pie from Angelo’s

With Western Foodies, you know we couldn’t just have a pumpkin carving event, we had to bring out something delicious to eat.

In case you weren’t there to enjoy all the fun yourself, we freshly catered some delicious pies from Angelo's to fuel hunger from the hard task of trying to carve the best pumpkin. Every member could choose between a wide range of flavors: we had apple, pumpkin, cherry, blueberry, and strawberry rhubarb.

If you are still dreaming about the pies from that night, you can find them while picking up (among many other delicious Italian products) right at Angelo's on Wonderland Road (and use your Student ID to get an extra 10% discount!).

Great Turnout! Plus ones always welcome

Everyone has a friend at a table!

All Foodies are able to attend these events for free, but they had the option of bringing a plus one for only a toonie ($2). If you came with a friend who loved the event make sure to get them to join the club for so much more fun.

For the foodies with some FOMO, don’t fret! There is so much more to come. Make sure that you stay up to date with our Instagram and check your email so you don’t miss out on any great events!

Congratulations to Pahul and Andrew for taking first place at the event! We had some incredible submissions and we were able to decide based on YOUR feedback via Instagram poll.

Thank you to everyone who made this event happen!

The Exec team didn’t want to miss out on the fun, too!

All of our events would not have been able to be done without our amazing members. Thank you so much for the great energy you all put into your amazing pumpkins. As well, a huge shoutout to all the execs who put in so much work behind the scenes.

Congratulations to our two well deserved winners, the creators of the owl pumpkin, and for everyone who came out to attend such a delicious event! We can't wait to see you at our next event.
